Rochester Caravan Holidays and Holiday Parks
Nearby Kent coastline
Rochester is an historic city and current town in the Medway region of Kent in the South East of England that is not only a popular holiday destination but it is also a thriving town full of everything you could need whilst away from home.

The modern day Rochester is full of both independent and chain shops, bars, cafes and restaurants as well as many visitors attractions but it is perhaps best known for it’s stunning Cathedral, its historic castle and for featuring in many of the book of Charles Dickens, who owned the nearby Gads Hill Place in Higham.

Rochester, alongside Chatham, Gillingham and Strood make up a large urban area known as the Medway Towns.

The town has a long military history due to its strategic importance of its position at the confluence of the Thames and the Medway and it is due to that history that many of the town most important sights are naval based.

From our point of view, one of the best aspects of the town is that it offers a great base for a holiday in the south east of England where you are near the coast and country but with all of the benefits of a thriving town.

Rochester Attractions

Rochester is one of the UK’s greatest historical cities and one of the most popular for visitors so it is no surprise that the town has lots of attraction and sites of interest to offer holidaymakers and day visitors.

There are 2 iconic sites that many think about when it comes to Rochester and that is Rochester Cathedral and Rochester Castle.

Whilst there has been a cathedral in the town going back to 604AD, it was in the medieval period when the current day cathedral’s construction was started with most of the building taking part between 1080-1130 and also in 1127 and 1343.

It was during the medieval period that towns iconic castle was built and it was quickly involved in 2 sieges, one in 1215 and one in 1264.

The castle was initially built to defend river crossing at the confluence of the Thames and Medway and to defend the Royal Dockyard at Chatham. That led to the town becoming hugely important on a national scale and that led to lots of investment in defensive structures with many of these now been interesting sights in and around the town.

Fort Clarence, Fort Pitt, Fort Amherst and Fort Gillingham were all built during the Napoleonic wars whilst numerous other forts and the Twydall Redoubts were built during the 1800’s.

This historical importance in military fields led to the town becoming hugely importance to the war effort during the first and second world wars.

Other famous historical sites include Upnor Castle, Esplanade Gardens and St Margaret’s Church.

The history of the town can be explored at the Guildhall Museum, Restoration House, the Huguenot Museum and Eastgate House.

For many it is the cities stunning location on the River Medway that is it’s biggest attraction and this vantage point can be enjoyed at lots of observation points throughout the town including the Esplanade Gardens that offers walks along the riverbank, near to the cities marina and with good views of the iconic Rochester Bridge.
