Tenby or in the native welsh language Dinbych-y-pysgod, which means fortlet of the fish, is a popular seaside town and resort on the south coast of Pembrokeshire in south west Wales.

The town is set atop and around 2 stunning bays on the western side of Carmarthen Bay and with many of the towns medieval walls still standing, including five arched barbican gatehouses, the historic town and port of Tenby is a great place to explore.

The history of the town can be seen throughout, from the Tudor Merchant House to the Palmerston Fort and from the historic walls to the small fishing harbour, all of which adds to the special atmosphere that the resort has.

When the sun shines it is easy to see why Tenby is one of, if not the, leading holiday resort of south Wales as one of the most notable features of Tenby is the miles and miles of sandy beach that follows the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

Tenby has lots to offer holidaymakers with the town itself been a major attractions.

In many ways you can split Tenby into 3 sections, the beach, the harbour and the cliff top town.

The miles of sandy beach in the west of Tenby can be explore from the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path or by walking down the hill to spend a day relaxing on the sand.

Just off of the coast within view from the beach are the islands of Caldey Island and St Catherine’s Island. St Catherine’s has a 19th century fort called Palmerston Fort and can be reached at low tide by foot.

Caldey Island is an offshore monastery which is also home to a local population of seals, both of which can be viewed from boats rides from Tenby.

The beach itself has all that you would expect from a popular seaside beach including a beachfront café, a small number of rides (including the ever present donkeys) and a small shop selling bucket and spades.

The beaches are split into Tenby South beach and Tenby North beach, the south beach more open and the north beach more secluded.

The town of Tenby itself is well worth exploring on foot as it offers a good range of local shops, cafes and restaurants as well as a number of historical sites. The most notable aspect of the town is the medieval town walls that feature a number of barbicans and give a great insight into the history of Tenby.

Other historical building and sites include St Marys Church and the Tudor Merchants House.

The third part of Tenby is the historic former fishing harbour that features a small beach and it flanked by colourful houses on 3 sides. This is also the place to book and take boat rides or fishing trips.

Animal lovers, aside from boat rides to see the seals, can enjoy a day out at the nearby Manor Wildlife Park.

Other attractions include the Penby Museum and Art Gallery, the Harbour Brewery, Upton Castle Gardens and Tenby Castle.

Location

Tenby is located on the south Wales coast, near to Pembroke in the county of Pembrokeshire.

The town can be reached via the A477, which links to the A48 which in turn links to the M4 and onto Swansea, Cardiff and England.

Transport

For those arriving at Tenby using there own transport, the resort is easily reach from the Welsh coast via the A40 which continues north towards Fishguard and onto Aberystwyth on the A487.

For those arriving from the major south Wales cities of Swansea and Cardiff and from Bristol and England, the town is easy to reach from the M4 although things do slow down do to single lanes on the A48 and A477.

The town is harder to reach from the north of England and from towns and villages in the middle of Wales with only the relatively small A483 from Buith Wells allowing access to the resort.

For those arriving on public transport there is a train station in Tenby, which is on the Pembroke Dock branch of the West Wales Line which offers direct trains to Carmarthen and Swansea and connections to Cardiff.

Out and About

Tenby is well position to explore south west Wales with Pembroke just a shirt drive away tov the west. The harbour towns of Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven are also to the west and from there you can take the ferry to Ireland for a day out with a difference.

To the east are the towns and cities of Carmarthen, Llanelli and Swansea whilst the Brecon Beacons, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is around an hour away.
