Watchet Caravan Holidays and Holiday Parks
The harbour town of Watchet is situated in a stunning located both on the mouth of the Washford River on Bridgwater Bay, part of the British Channel and on the edge of the Exmoor National Park.

That allows holidaymakers to enjoy the best of coast and country in the south west county of Somerset.

The town can trace it’s roots way back to the Iron Age and ever since then it has had a fascinating history including been owned by Celt’s, Saxons and even Vikings but the modern day town was really developed around the exporting of Iron ore in the 1900’s when Watchet become a continually growing port.

Nowadays, the port has been converted into a harbour which is a great place to walk around and take in the beautiful sun sets that fall over the Bristol Channel.

Watchet offers a small town centre and a number of attractions in and around the resort but from our point of view it is the caravan holiday parks in and around the town that is our focus and the great news is that there are a small number of holiday parks available for holidaymakers.

Watchet Caravan Holidays

Watchet and the Somerset / Devon border region is home to a small number of caravan holiday parks and whilst most are smaller caravan parks that are ideal for relaxing at and for using as a base, you can also choose holiday parks with a good range of facilities, activities and accommodation choices.

Watchet Attractions

As a mostly rural area with a long and fascinating history, it is no surprise that the attractions in and around the resort of Watchet are based around the natural beauty of the resort and also important historical sights that give an insight into that fascinating past of the region.

For many it is the beautiful Somerset coast and the stunning views out over the Bristol channel that is the major attraction of Watchet and those views can of course be best seen from the seafront and the main beach in Watchet.

The towns harbour is a great place to unwind and take a stroll on an evening before heading into town for a meal.

The harbour was initially developed as a trading port which brought much wealth and importance to the town including a railway during the Victorian era. This railway still links the town to other parts of Somerset and North Devon but the best way to experience rail travel whilst on holiday has to be on the West Somerset Railway.

The heritage railway, which often features stream locomotives makes a great day out that the whole family can enjoy and make sit easy to explore the region including the villages of Williton, Stogumber, Kingswood, Crowcombe and Bishops Lydeard.

The history of the region can be seen throughout Watchet and the surrounding area but there are a number of places that really bring that history to life. A popular day out for those interesting in historical religious sites is Cleeve Abbey, whilst Watchet Museum and Market House Museum brings more social issues to life.

Location

Watchet is located on the Somerset coast, 15 miles west of Bridgwater, 15 miles north-west of Taunton and 9 miles east of the resort town of Minehead.

Sitting at the mouth of the river Washford, on Bridgwater Bay, which is part of the Bristol Channel, the town offers a sheltered location but still with great sea views.

Transport

If you are using your own transport to reach to resort, the good news is that it is relatively straightforward to reach from all parts of England, Scotland and Wales as it is just a short drive from the M5 motorway at Bridgwater.

From there you can easily connect to the English Midlands as well as the North, Scotland and Wales.

If you are coming from the south coast, there are a number of A roads linking Somerset to the major towns and cities, whilst the A39 links the resort to North Devon and onto Cornwall.

Reaching the town via public transport is harder however as whilst there is a limited number of long distance coach services that call into Watchet, to reach the town using rail services you will be best heading for Taunton and then using bus or taxi services to reach the resort.

Out and About

If you are a nature lover you are in for a great time when visiting Watchet as not only is it located by the beautiful Somerset coastline to the north but it has both the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (to the south and east) and the iconic Exmoor National Park (to the south and south west).

If towns and cities are more to your liking for a day out both Bridgwater and Taunton are just a short drive from the town and both offer lots of attractions, bars, cafes, restaurants and local shopping.

There are a number of other seaside towns and resorts that can easily be reached including Minehead and Westward Ho! to the east and Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-Super-Mare to the west.

Further to the west, the historic village of Glastonbury is well worth the longer drive as you can visit many historic sites including Glastonbury Abbey and you can also add in visits to the natural phenomenon’s founder at Cheddar and Wookey Hole. The caves and caverns in this part of the world rival the majesty of any found anywhere in the world.
