Burnham-on-Sea Attractions
For many it is the natural beauty of the Somerset coastline that is the major attraction of Burnham-on-Sea as the resort offers lots of opportunities to enjoy it.
Brean Down is a local landmark and an ideal place to take in the views out towards the Bristol Channel whilst the many beaches in and around the resort are of course not just great places to take in the views but to also relax and spend time together as a family.
Berrow Beach is a great place to find somewhere quiet or simply head down to the main Burnham-on-Sea beach and enjoy a walk along the towns pier, one of if not the smallest pier in the UK.
Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park is a large urban park to enjoy when the weather is nice. Of course that is something that cannot be guaranteed but there are a few local museums to spend time in when the weather changes.
There are a couple of family theme parks in the region including Animal Farm Adventure Park and Fun City at Brean Leisure Park that are ideal days out for those with younger children in their family.
There is a long seafront walk in Burnham that makes it easy to get from the resort up to the iconic Low Lighthouse that is located in the north of Burnham.
Location
Burnham is located on the Somerset coast on the banks of the Bristol Channel, looking across the water towards Barry in South Wales.
To the north of the resort is Western-Super-Mare whilst to the south is the town of Bridgwater.
Transport
For those who are visiting the resort using their own transport, it couldn’t be simpler as the town is located just a few short miles from the M5 motorway which links to all parts of England, Scotland and Wales via the UK’s motorway network.
If you are coming from the south coast, you can reach the town via the A36/A303 which connects to the M27.
If you are relying on public transport, it is tougher to the reach the resort. There are some long distance coach services that visit the town.
Unfortunately there is no train station in the town centre of Burnham-on-Sea, although there is a nearby train station which is just a short taxi ride form the town.
Highbridge and Burnham railway station is situated on the Bristol to Taunton line and offers local services to both. From Bristol you can link to most major towns and cities across England, Scotland and Wales.
Out and About
The town is well located for exploring Somerset, Devon, Cornwall all parts of the south west with the popular all action resort of Western-Super-mare just a shot drive to the north.
Further north is the popular and vibrant city of Bristol, which is home to vast array of attractions, historic sites, local shops, bars, cafes and restaurants and is well worth a day out.
To the east of the town is the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which is a great place to park up and set off on a number of available walking and hiking trails, so don’t forget your walking boots for a great day out amongst the local wildlife and nature of Somerset.
Also to the east is the historic Wookey Hole, home to a number beautiful natural caves and other natural beauty spots and you can also visit the nearby Cheddar and Cheddar Gorge, again home to caves as well as a massive gorge but perhaps it is as the home of Cheddar cheese that makes the town most famous.
To the south west of Burnham is Glastonbury and whilst it may now be best known for the world class festival that takes place there most summers, the town is historic and is home to a beautiful abbey.
To the south is the town of Bridgwater and the county town of Taunton, both of which offer good chances to take in the local atmosphere of a traditional Somerset town as well as enjoy visiting local shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Other popular seaside resorts in Somerset include Watchet and Minehead, both of which can easily be reached as is the north Devon coast including the likes of Ilfracombe and Westward Ho! as well as the iconic Exmoor National park.
