Weymouth Attractions

With the sun shining for much of the main caravan holiday season and with the stunning location of Weymouth, it is no surprise that many of the resorts main attractions are outside and allow you take advantage of your surroundings.

The resorts main beach is a great place to relax and simply spend quality time with the family and as it is just a short walk form the main promenade, you can easily grab a bite to eat or visit some local shops in between reading a book, playing beach cricket or taking a dip in the sea.

One of the highlights of the town is the famous harbour that you will surly have seen on tv programmes about Dorset or on postcards as not only is it picture postcard stunning and Instagrammed by everybody who visits, but it is also arguably the hub of the town, certainly during the main tourist season.

The harbour, which is just a short walk from the main beach features a 17th century layout that is now home to local bars, cafes and shops. The harbour walls are the perfect place to stroll around and take in great views and to look at envy at the private yachts that now fill the many births.

In-between the beach and the harbour is Weymouth Pavilion and the impressive Jurassic Skyline observation tower that allows you to look over the town, Portland harbour and on clear days you can even see the French coast.

As with so many ports on the south coast, the towns history has often involved battles and naval skirmishes with that history perhaps best experienced at the impressed seafront Nothe Fort.

The resort is home to a Sea Life centre which makes a great afternoon out if the weather does take a turn for the worse but if the sun is still shining, why not head to Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens and take in the beauty of 1000’s of stunning plants. Another ideal day out for lovers of gardens, plants and flowers as well as history is Sandsfoot Castle.

Location

Weymouth is located on the Dorset coast, on the south coast of England and just to the north of the Isle of Portland.

The town is roughly halfway between Exeter and Southampton and close to the A35 main road that links the towns and cities of the central south coast region.

Transport

If you are heading down to Weymouth using your own vehicle, it is relatively straight forward to reach the town, although it is a about as far south as you can go!

Weymouth is just a shot drive from the A35, which links to the M27 at Southampton via the A31. That allows access to the East coast, the East Midlands, the north and onto Scotland.

If you are heading north west, the town is linked to the M5 motorway via the A37 from where you can connect to the West Midlands, the North West, Wales and the west coast of Scotland.

If you are relying on public transport, there are a number of long distance coach services that call into the and there is a good range of intercity train services into the town’s main train station.

From Weymouth station you can take direct trains to London Waterloo, Bristol Temple Meads and Gloucester as well as Southampton and Yeovil.

Out and About

Not only is the town’s location on the south coast full of the natural beauty of Weymouth Bay and of the views out over the English Channel but Weymouth sits on the edge of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

To the north of the resort is the town of Dorchester, whilst to the north west is the historic city of Salisbury.

To the west and along the south coast are the popular urban centres of Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth- all three of which have become tourist resort sin their own right and that offer ferry services to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and across the channel to France for days out with a difference.

To the east of the town is the south coast of Devon as well as the historic city of Exeter and the beautiful Dartmoor National Park.
