Port Seton Caravan Holidays

As you would expect from a town called PORT Seton, one of the key aspects of the town is its harbour, which was built by George Seton between 1655 and 1665. Through the area’s history fishing has been the key industry in both Cockenzie and Port Seton to the point where the 2 villages have developed and merged to form the 1 town.

Nowadays Port Seton can be split into two parts, the old town and the new town. The old town, split between the two harbours, retains a traditional look and feel which is similar to many small coastal towns and villages found around the Scottish coastline.

The old town in Port Seton is a great place to take a stroll around and enjoy stepping back into the history and culture of Scotland. It is also a great place to spend time with friends and family and explore the coastline, take in the views of the Firth of Forth and simply relax in this peaceful part of Scotland.

In recent times the fishing industry has struggled but the harbours in Port Seton still maintain a fleet of vessels with Prawns the major catch. Nowadays it is tourism that provides much of the industry in the region with a mixture of holidaymakers and day trippers from the nearby Central belt of Scotland.

To the East of Port Seton is Seton Sands, a large caravan holiday park operated by Haven Holidays and it is this holiday park that brings the majority of tourists to the town. Seton Sands is a tranquil holiday park perfect for a relaxing base to explore the South East and Central parts of Scotland but whilst many use the park and others caravan parks in Port Seton solely as a base for exploration, we would recommend allowing sometime to visit Cockenzie and Port Seton itself.

There have been a number of improvements to the town in recent times with a new promenade area that includes the creation of a new coastal walk, which is part of the 215-kilometre-long John Muir Way that runs all of the way from Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute to Dunbar in East Lothian.

To the South East of Port Seton is the Seton Collegiate Church, also known as Seton Chapel which is an ancient monument cared for by Historic Scotland. Next to the monument is Seton Palace, now known as Seton House.

That’s not to say that the surrounding area shouldn’t be explored and the good news is that if you prefer to leave the car and use public transport Port Seton is well connected. There is direct bus route to Prestonpans Railway station, which is on the North Berwick line offering direct train services to Glasgow, Motherwell, Edinburgh (both Waverley and Haymarket), Musselburgh, Longniddry, North Berwick and Dunbar.

Other bus services go directly to Edinburgh and Musselburgh, a historic town well worth a visit for any holidaymaker.
